What is quantum science?
Quantum science has been studied for more than 100 years. It explores how matter and energy behave at the smallest scales, such as atoms, photons and electrons. At this level, nature follows rules that are very different from the ones we experience in everyday life, leading to surprising phenomena that scientists can harness in new ways. Technologies based on quantum discoveries, including GPS, lasers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), already impact day-to-day life.
Why is quantum so important?
In recent years, scientists have developed new ways to take advantage of unique quantum properties to drive new discoveries and technologies, such as highly precise sensors, new types of computers and ultra-secure communication. While many applications are still emerging, quantum science has the potential to transform fields ranging from medicine and manufacturing to finance and national security.
Why should non-scientists care about quantum?
Much like the internet and smartphones grew out of earlier scientific breakthroughs, quantum has the potential to improve many aspects of life as we know it. Quantum technologies may lead to faster drug discovery, more secure online communication, more accurate medical imaging and navigation systems, and new ways to design materials, batteries and clean energy systems. They are also expected to strengthen economic competitiveness and create new industries and jobs.

What is the Capital of Quantum?
The Capital of Quantum (COQ) is Maryland’s statewide initiative that coordinates, promotes, connects, and invests in the region’s quantum ecosystem — bringing together industry, research institutions, federal agencies, and investors to make Maryland and the national capital region the premier destination for quantum innovation, talent, and commercialization. Launched in January 2025 and anchored by the University of Maryland, COQ is headquartered in Discovery District Maryland — one of the most concentrated innovation corridors on the East Coast. COQ has already helped attract more than $500 million in public, federal and private quantum investments on the way to a target of $1 billion by 2030.
